      Seneca College cFLEX Conference 2019

Come to the cFLEX Conference 2019 to connect with your peers in the Seneca and Centre for Flexible Learning (cFLEX) community. We can’t wait to see you outside the virtual world of teaching, so that we can spend a day learning from one another, sharing experiences, and finding support to continue in this important role.   The cFLEX Conference gathers online and correspondence instructors together for a one-day, in-person opportunity to connect with colleagues and peers. Enjoy Nina Spencer’s keynote address on Getting Passion Out of Your Profession: How to keep loving your living come what may, and help your students do the same! The day will also include opportunities to network at breakfast and lunch, and participate in hands-on professional development workshops delivered by internal and external online learning experts.   Workshops Workshops are held at 10:15 am, 11:30 am, and 1:15 pm. Please choose one (1) workshop for each time slot option.  Workshop Presenters A. Burning Questions This workshop is available at 10:15 am or 1:15 pm. Ever wondered about the most frequently asked questions received by the cFLEX Department? Wanted to know more about the inner workings of how we deliver upwards of 1200 online courses to 15,000 or more students annually? Come meet face-to-face with our cFLEX department team to get a glimpse from ‘the other side’ of things! B. Emotions in Online Learning  This workshop is available at 11:30 am. Instructors’ emotions and the ability of instructors to self-regulate is essential in dealing with the uncertainty surrounding online instruction, since most of the student-instructor communication is done online or through email. Understanding educators’ emotions in traditional and online learning is not only important for their own well-being, but also to develop students’ understanding of their emotions and self-regulation processes. Encouraging educators to gain awareness and identify their emotions during instruction are essential in promoting mental health awareness and preventing emotional burn-out among educators. C. Learning Portal PLUS This workshop is available at 10:15 am or 1:15 pm. This workshop will introduce the Learning Portal, outline popular components, and suggest ways to integrate materials into your existing lessons to support common issues faced by students. D. Tools of Engagement This workshop is available at 10:15 am or 11:30 am. Regardless of how impressive and interactive the content in an online course may be, what is the one thing students are really looking for? Ever wondered how to get students to respond really well to what you’re doing and see that reflected in your course evaluations?  E. Students with Accommodations: Q&A This workshop is available at 10:15 am or 11:30 am. When you receive an accommodation letter, do you have more questions than answers? Come to this session and experience through fun, hands-on activities how different disabilities/diagnoses can impact learning. Gain perspective on how technology and strategies can support students.  Understand how students with accommodations can still be able to master your course! F. Connecting: Everyday Cyber Security  This workshop is available at 1:15pm only. Have you been seeing cyber security in the news lately and reflected on the importance of data security? Have you wondered about the use of your personal data or the vulnerabilities of your devices?
